Tanzania Park Fees 2026
Four rules for calculating park fees correctly. Most operators miss at least one.
Verified rates for the Northern Circuit, reconciled line by line against ground operator invoices. What follows is the exact method we use at Saleh Safaris after getting it wrong on a real client quote.
How We Found This
A $4.13 gap that revealed two wrong assumptions
On a quote for a family of four covering four days in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area plus three days in Tarangire, our park fee total came out $4.13 lower than the figure on the ground operator's invoice. $4.13 sounds like rounding. It was not.
Two separate errors cancelled each other out almost perfectly by coincidence. The first: we added 18% VAT on top of fee figures that already included it. VAT on park fees is real, but the working rates every operator uses are already VAT-inclusive, so we were counting it twice. The second: we charged the NCA entry fee but missed the NCA overnight fee entirely, a separate $59 per adult per night that many quotes never show.
If those two errors had not offset, the client quote would have been wrong by several hundred dollars. On a $47,000 itinerary that is not catastrophic. On a tighter quote it could wipe the margin.
We reconciled every line, traced both errors back to the source, and rewrote the calculation method. What follows is the correct version, tested against supplier figures.
The Method
Four rules. All four have to be right.
Rule 1
The published tariff is not the price
TANAPA and NCAA publish their tariffs excluding VAT, and 18% VAT applies to every fee. The government PDF says Serengeti entry is $70; the amount that actually leaves your account is $82.60. Quote from the base figure and every fee line is 18% short. Add VAT to an operator's quote, which already includes it, and you have counted it twice.
Rule 2
Sleeping inside a park is a separate fee
Entry gets you in. Sleeping inside the boundary costs extra, per person per night: $59.00 at a permanent NCA lodge, $70.80 at a seasonal camp inside the NCA, $59.00 to $70.80 in the Serengeti depending on month. Many quotes show entry only. On a family of four spending two nights inside the NCA, that is over $560 missing.
Rule 3
Entry runs on a 24-hour permit, not a calendar day
Enter a gate at 3pm and your permit is valid until 3pm the following day. Exit before it expires and that was one entry day, even though you were inside on two calendar dates. Counting calendar days is the common shortcut and it overstates the total. Overnight fees have no such subtlety: one charge per night actually slept inside.
Rule 4
The crater fee is per vehicle, per descent
The Ngorongoro Crater Service Fee is $295.00 per vehicle per descent into the crater. Not per day. Not per person. If you stay four nights in the NCA and descend once, the fee is $295.00. If you descend twice on separate days, it is $590. Many quotes multiply the fee by the number of nights, which overstates the cost considerably.

Worked Example
2 adults, 2 children. Two days in the NCA with two nights at a lodge inside, one crater descent, then two days and two nights in Tarangire.
This is the group type that generated the original calculation error. Here is the correct breakdown, peak season.

The original calculation on the real itinerary came out at $3,244.27 against the operator's $3,248.40, a $4.13 gap. That gap obscured two errors: VAT counted a second time added roughly $470, and the missing NCA overnight fee removed roughly $474. They almost perfectly cancelled. The worked example above uses a simplified group and day count to show the method, not the exact original itinerary.

What to check in any Tanzania safari quote
Ask your operator to show park fees as a separate line, broken down by park and day count. A quote that shows a single "park fees: $X" figure with no breakdown is not one you can verify.
For Ngorongoro specifically, check whether your itinerary sleeps inside the conservation area. If it does, the quote needs both the $70.80 entry fee per day and the overnight fee per night ($59.00 lodge, $70.80 tented camp). If you sleep in Karatu and visit the crater on a day trip, entry only is correct.
The crater descent fee should appear once per planned descent, not once per night in the NCA. Two nights at the crater rim with one descent into the crater is $295.00, not $590.

Park fee questions, answered directly
Do Tanzania national park fees include VAT?
The published TANAPA and NCAA tariffs are VAT-exclusive, and 18% VAT genuinely applies. So the real Serengeti entry fee is not the $70 you will find in the government tariff PDF: it is $82.60 in peak season. Every figure on this page already includes the VAT. The mistake to avoid is paying it twice: operator quotes already carry VAT inside the fee lines, so a quote that adds a separate 18% on top of these figures is overcharging.
Does Ngorongoro charge one fee or two?
It depends on whether you sleep inside. Everyone pays the NCAA entry fee ($70.80 per adult per entry day). If you stay overnight inside the conservation area, a second fee applies per night: $59.00 at a permanent lodge, or $70.80 at a seasonal tented camp. A day trip to the crater from a lodge in Karatu pays entry only, no overnight fee. Quotes that show a single flat NCA figure with no breakdown are usually hiding one of these two errors.
How is the Ngorongoro Crater descent fee calculated?
Per vehicle, per descent. One trip down costs $295.00, regardless of how many people are in the vehicle. If you stay three nights in the NCA and descend the crater once, the fee is $295.00 total, not $295.00 multiplied by three nights.
How are entry days counted?
By 24-hour gate permit, not by calendar day. Enter the Serengeti at 3pm and your permit runs to 3pm the next day; leave before it expires and that was one entry day even though you were inside on two calendar dates. Counting calendar days overstates the fees. Overnight fees are simpler: strictly one charge per night slept inside the boundary.
What are the 2026 park fees for non-resident adults?
Serengeti entry: $82.60 peak season, $70.80 low season (15 March to 15 May). NCA entry: $70.80 all year. Tarangire entry: $59.00 peak, $53.10 low. Can I pay park fees in cash?
No. TANAPA completed the move to electronic-only payments in 2025. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at main entry points. Your operator handles all gate payments in advance through its own account, so this is only relevant if you are self-driving.
Do children pay Tanzania park fees?
Yes, at reduced rates. Children aged 5 to 15 pay $23.60 entry for the Serengeti and the NCA, and $17.70 for Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Overnight fees for children are $11.80 per night in most cases ($35.40 at seasonal camps inside the NCA). Children under 5 are free on every TANAPA and NCAA fee.
